Every Christmas Eve, Grandma tells the same story, and every year we let her, because some stories are worth hearing a dozen times. This one is about the December the power went out across the whole block, twenty minutes before dinner, with twelve people crammed into her kitchen and nowhere else to be. Instead of scrambling for flashlights, she lit every candle in the house, pulled out an old deck of cards, and told us that some of her best Christmases happened exactly like this — nothing going according to plan.
We used to just laugh along and forget it by New Year’s. This year, one of the grandkids finally pulled out a phone and recorded her telling it start to finish, candlelight and all. Now it’s saved here, word for word, in her voice, for whichever grandchild wants to hear it fifty years from now.
This page is an example only — a real memory page would carry your own family’s story.
“The year the lights went out, we didn’t stop the celebration — we just moved it closer to the fireplace.”
