How Your Site Grows

Your family site has five parts that work together. Let’s build one, step by step, for an example family called the Smiths. The Smiths are made up, and their photos come from a free photo library.

Step 1 of 5

Add your people

Start with one or two people you want to remember: family, relatives or friends. Each one gets their own page, with their name, dates, a photo and more. You can add any unfilled fields, like a birthday or a maiden name, later.

People

New

The Smiths add 8 people. There are John and Mary, their son John Jr. and his wife Paula, and the grandchildren, Lily and Ben. There is also Aunt Rose, and a friend, Ed Miller.

Step 2 of 5

Put them in families

A family shows who belongs together, and each person’s role in it: husband, wife, son, daughter and so on.

You can make as many families as you like. The Smiths make two: “John & Mary Smith” and “John Jr. & Paula Smith.”

Good to know

One person can be in many families. John Jr. is “Son” in one family and “Husband” in the other. He still has just one page and one set of memories. Any person can also stand alone, without being in any family.

Step 3 of 5

Write a memory

A memory is a text story that can contain photos, videos, audios and documents.

Pick the people who are in it, and the memory shows up on each of their pages by itself.

Memories

New

“Lily’s first birthday” has 3 people in it: Lily, her mother Paula, and Grandma Mary.

Written once. It shows on all 3 pages.

Good to know

Over the years, one person can have hundreds of memories. Add them a few at a time, whenever you like.

Step 4 of 5

The books make themselves

As you add memories, the site builds a book for each person, with every memory they are in, in date order.

It also builds books for occasions and places, like “Christmas” or “Grandma’s farm.”

Books

Over time, the Smiths add more memories. The site makes a book for each of the 8 people, plus books for Christmas and Grandma’s farm.

Lily’s book has the gold ring above. Here are her memories, in date order.

  3. December 2019Christmas at Grandma’s farmAlso in the Christmas and Grandma’s farm books

Good to know

Nobody has to arrange anything. Each new memory goes into the right books, in the right order.

Step 5 of 5

See it all on a timeline

The timeline shows a person’s life on one line, memory by memory, oldest first. If their page has a date of birth, it also shows how old they were at each memory.

There is nothing to set up. On Lily’s page, tap or click the big button “See Lily’s Timeline.” Every person’s page has one.

Timeline

New

Lily’s page has her date of birth, March 10, 2018. So her timeline marks the day she was born, and shows how old she was at each memory.

Lily’s timeline

  1. 2018
  2. Lily was born
  3. March 10, 2018 Newborn

  4. 2019
  5. March 2019 About 1 year old

Lily’s first birthday Grandma Mary baked the cake, and Lily…
  6. December 2019 About 1 year, 9 months old

Christmas at Grandma’s farm Snow on the barn, and the whole family…

On your site, tap or click a memory to read all of it. On the Timeline page, you can also choose “Everyone in the family” to see every memory together.

Good to know

When you add a memory, the site asks, “How well do you know the date?” If you only know “about 1950” or “the 1950s,” that is fine. Old family stories still fit.

You only do two things

Here is the whole idea in one place.

You do this

  1. Add your peopleand put them in families
  2. Write your memoriesand pick who is in each one

The site does the rest

  • Gives each person their own page
  • Shows each memory on the page of everyone in it
  • Builds a book for each person, in date order
  • Builds books for occasions and places
  • Lines up each person’s memories on a timeline, with how old they were
