Every Thanksgiving, after the pie and before the dishes, Grandpa Walter tells the story of the winter of 1963 — the year his father, Antonio, drove three hours through a snowstorm with a borrowed turkey tied to the roof of the truck. He tells it a little differently each year. The truck gets older, the snow gets deeper, the turkey gets bigger. This year, for the first time, the grandchildren corrected him, and he pretended to be offended.
Then David and Rachel stood up and said they’d been saving the news until the whole family was in one room: Noah was on the way. Grandpa forgot the story entirely. Grandma Ellie cried into the gravy. Mia asked whether the baby would like pie.
We wrote down Grandpa’s version this year, all of it, so that someday Noah can hear where the turkey really came from.
“The winter of ’63, your great-grandfather drove three hours in the snow with a borrowed turkey tied to the roof. It was the biggest turkey anyone had ever seen.” — Grandpa Walter, every year, a little bigger.
